The importance of the spiritual aspect of patients' lives is beginning to be recognized for the first time in modern history. This article examines several issues in relation to religion and spirituality, including effects on the healthy and sick, the negative aspects of religion and spirituality, their relationship to mental and physical health, how religion affects recovery, and coping with death. Guidelines are provided for developing skills to meet spiritual needs of patients and recommendations are given for surgical patients.
