Quantitative analysis of vapor phase formaldehyde condensates with water and methanol was performed by reaction with N,O-bis-(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide to form trimethylsilyl derivatives of the condensates, which were then analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Methylal, methylene glycol, and a series of poly(oxymethylene) glycol monomethyl ethers accounted for the total formaldehyde content in vapors at equilibrium with a formalin solution. Structures of the formaldehyde species were confirmed by capillary gas chromatography-chemical ionization mass spectrometry with ammonia as the reactant gas.
