Superheavy quasi-atoms and quantum electrodynamics in strong fields

Distinct peak structures have been observed in spectra of positrons emitted in collisions of very heavy ions such as U-Th, U-U, Th-Cm and U-Cm. Characteristic features of these structures are discussed and confronted with our theoretical results. It is argued that this experimental finding could be associated with the spontaneous positron emission in the strong Coulomb field of giant nuclear molecules. © 1985.
