Dynamical aspects: Coherent production of positrons in heavy ion collisions

Collisions of very heavy ions are discussed as a means to investigate quantum electrodynamics in the presence of strong external fields. The action of the combined Coulomb field of the closely approaching nuclei leads to strong binding of the inner electron shells and to large induced transitions. The resulting mechanisms for the production of positrons are discussed in detail and compared with recent experiments. The importance of multi-step excitations is stressed and first results of coupled channel calculations are presented. © 1980.
