UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC MULTIPATH SIGNAL PROCESSING.

An acoustic model of the inhomogeneous medium is used to determine the spatially dependent impulse response between source and receiver. From the impulse response, an optimum-likelihood-ratio processor is derived and receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) are presented as a measure of performance. This approach utilizes the presence of multipath for signal detection, and the ROCs provide an upper bound for detection performance of other algorithms that utilize knowledge of the inhomogeneous nature of the ocean. The method can be extended to include acoustic phenomena other than multipath.
