High rate test of a straw drift chamber

The response of a straw drift chamber subjected to extremely high rates is reported. An average background rate of up to 10 MHz was obtained using ten 10 mCi Sr90 radioactive sources. We have studied the efficiency, resolution, pulse shape and the response of the front end electronics as a function of the rate. Using Monte Carlo generated data, the effect of pulse shadowing and electronic performance is studied separately.
