An precedented number of clinical trials are now being conducted in acute myocardial infarction (MI). Three broad avenues of research are being explored: (1) treatment strategies to achieve normal reperfusion in the infarct-related artery as soon as possible after symptom onset; (2) therapies to reduce reperfusion injury and/or improve myocardial function after patency has been restored; and (3) approaches to lower mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock. In this second article in a series edited by Dr. Robert M. Califf of Duke, Dr. E. Magnus Ohman provides capsule summaries of trials in each of these areas.
