The postoperative care of the trauma patient requires an understanding of the use of analgesics, sedatives, and neuromuscular blocking agents, as well as principles of nutritional and metabolic support. Complications in the postoperative period, despite attempts to prevent them, are common. Anticipation, early recognition, and treatment of complications are essential to successful clinical outcomes.
