Success rates for the male transobturator sling can be influenced by many variables. Determining who is a good surgical candidate will improve patient counseling, management of expectations, and outcomes. The extent of the currently published literature in this subject describes variable inclusion and exclusion criteria, patient evaluation strategies, and definitions of treatment success. As such, there is controversy regarding prognostic factors. Herein we review the literature to guide patient evaluation and discuss our current strategy for selecting patients who are good candidates for the male transobturator sling. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
