The author describes how short written assignments can be used in clinical nursing courses to promote the development of critical thinking skills of students. With these assignments, students need to independently think about the clinical topic and are less likely to summarize what others have written. Many of these short papers can be done as activities in post clinical conferences and are critiqued by peers rather than faculty.
