An approach to aeroelastic modeling and simulation of limit cycle oscillations of aircraft wings with stores

Aircraft wings carrying stores are susceptible to nonlinear, aeroelastic Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCO), which can lead to reduced flight and mission performance. LCO dynamics and control simulation studies, although of great importance, are often based on simplified, typical-section airfoil models. A more accurate beam-rod structural model is proposed in this paper, which permits representation of spanwise variation of wing displacements and properties, and the presence of multiple stores on rigid / flexible mounts. The occurrence of LCO due to structural nonlinearity is demonstrated. Several observed forms of LCO behavior are related to the parameters and flutter / divergence properties of the corresponding base linear aeroelastic system. © 2012 AIAA.
