Electrical impedance of electrode encapsulation tissue

The complex resistivity of the encapsulation tissue that surrounds chronically implanted electrodes was measured in vitro as a function of frequency. The value of resistivity and its frequency dependence were functions of the morphology of the tissue. The results Indicate that the encapsulation tissue will offer a significant barrier to current flow, and suggest that the encapsulation should be included when calculating the electric field induced by chronically implanted neural prosthesis electrodes.
