Hydropower in Bhutan: a long-term development perspective

Journal Article

Bhatan, a mountainous kingdom in the Himalaya, has limited resources for economic development, except for the potential of hydroelectricity. The current domestic market for hydropower is small and will not change dramatically in the future. India has large electricity markets in the states of Bihar, Orissa, and West Bengal, and there is a developing one in Bangladesh. Therefore, Bhutan must now take strategic steps for hydropower development if it is to capture a significant share of the export markets on a long-term basis. The hydro development plans, however, should not be considered as isolated projects; instead, they must become hubs of development activities that encourage growth also in other economic spheres in the river basins of Bhutan. -Author
