The patient with late-life depression frequently presents in a complex manner that may require hospitalization. Accurate diagnosis and treatment of these patients is essential to prevent disability, caregiver burden and nursing home placement. Confusion, suicidality and aggression represent psychiatric emergencies in the elderly and may require hospitalization for effective management. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
