Top-seeded flux growth of rare-earth vanadates

The growth of RVO4 crystals (R = Tb, Dy and Tm) by pulling from Pb2V2O7 flux is described. Crystals up to 19 mm in length and 4 mm in width were obtained with simple apparatus. X-ray anomalous transmission topography showed that the average dislocation density in optically clear sections was of the order of 102 cm-2. The crystal quality improved with increasing distance from the seed and regions near the termination facets of some crystals were nearly free from dislocations. © 1974.
