Overview


Imari Z. Smith is a current doctoral candidate in Duke University’s Joint Program in Sociology and Public Policy studying the relationships between health disparities, intersectional identities, and discrimination throughout the life course. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from in Women's Studies with Highest Distinction from Duke University for her senior honors thesis titled Black Femininity Through the White Speculum: The Implications of Medicosocialism and the Disproportionate Regulation of Black Women’s Reproductive Autonomy, and a Master of Public Health in Health Behavior from the UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. Prior to her doctoral studies, Imari served as a Health Equity Research Associate and NIH Grant Project Manager for the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University. Imari's dissertation project, for which she receives external funding as a 2023 recipient of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) American Dissertation Fellowship, employs latent class analysis to illuminate how people make sense of their discriminatory experiences and whether those understandings pattern their health outcomes and subsequent interactions with health professionals
