In the population diagnosed with osteoporosis, balance impairments may contribute to frailty. Consequences of osteoporosis include thoracic kyphosis caused by compression fractures. This author investigated whether postural changes could negatively impact balance in women with osteoporosis. Fifty-two women diagnosed with osteoporosis were measured for both balance and kyphosis. Those who failed the balance test had a statistically greater degree of kyphosis than those who passed, even after controlling for age differences. This study quantified past studies, which suggested a relationship between balance and posture. © 2002 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
