The static dipole polarizability of the ground state ytterbium atom is calculated using full and approximate relativistic ab initio methods. Our recommended polarizability of 143 au is consistent with experimental atomic spectral data. The corresponding van der Waals coefficient C6 of Yb2, derived using Padé approximants, is 2062 (200) au. © 2007 American Chemical Society.
