An analytical/numerical matching – Turbulent core model blade vortex intertaction study

A novel method for calculating parallel two-dimensional blade vortex interaction (BVI) has been developed. The technique is based on the application of an aeroacoustic boundary element formulation using Analytical/Numerical Matching (ANM) in conjunction with a new vortex formulation, called Turbulent Core Model (TCM) vortex dynamics. The present study was done in two dimensions to gain much needed physical insight into the approximately two dimensional nature of the experimental interaction. The model offers a simple and robust formulation for the calculation of the radiated acoustic pressure from a two-dimensional BVI. Results presented are consistent with those prescribed by the BVI Informal Working Group, an experimental/ computational group led by NASA. Calculations include near-field radiated acoustic pressure, blade surface pressure time histories and chordwise pressure distributions. The results presented have implications on the understanding of the essential physics of the BVI problem.
