A brief report of Mednick & Schulsinger's high‐risk study of schizophrenia is given. Path analyses of social and biological variables in the study demonstrate sex differences with implications for the etiology of schizophrenia. Sex is discussed as a possible non‐descriptive, biological addition to the traditional descriptive way of conceptualizing schizophrenia. Evidence for other social or psychological extensions of the definition of schizophrenia is mentioned. Copyright © 1980, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
