A relationship between phosphatidylcholine metabolism and mixed function oxidases was evaluated in rats fed with different proteins diets. Hepatic rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) phosphatidylcholine (PC) was significantly reduced in rats fed with rice diet as compared to 20% casein diet. Supplementation of rice diet with lysine and threonine significantly increased the PC levels of both RER and SER. The de-novo synthesis of PC was higher in SER as compared to RER of 20% casein diet fed rats. Feeding of rice diet significantly reduced the incorporation of NaH232PO4 into PC of rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The specific activities of mixed function oxidases (MFO), i.e. cytochrome P-450 (EC 1.14.1.1), NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase (EC 1.6.2.4), cytochrome b5 and NADH cytochrome b5 reductase (EC 1.6.2.2) in 20% casein diet fed rats were greater in SER than in RER. The levels of cytochrome P-450, cytochrome b5 and the activities of NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase, NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase of rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum of rats fed the rice diet were lower than those fed the 20% casein diet. Supplementation of rice diet with lysine and threonine increased the activities of the MFO system. These results suggest that the PC may play a significant role in MFO system. © 1988 Pergamon Journals Ltd.
