Metabolic Syndrome and Cataract
Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of metabolic abnormalities including hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity, is an emerging public health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Age-related cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly population. Experimental evidence shows that control of risk factors with therapeutic interventions or lifestyle modifications potentially delay the onset of cataract. Several clinical and epidemiologic studies suggest an association of metabolic syndrome and its components with cataract. In this review, we summarize current evidence supporting an association between metabolic syndrome and age-related cataract from observational studies and current developments in understanding the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying this association.
