This chapter presents an ontology-based approach to address some of the requirements of cognitive radio (CR). It illustrates how to capture knowledge about the domain of radio communication using ontologies. All of the examples used a purely declarative representation of domain knowledge. The objective is to show that such a knowledge representation can be used by generic-reasoning tools both to formulate queries and to infer answers to such queries. Such a query-answering mechanism is generic and thus satisfies the requirement of being capable of "responding to surprise," one of the key features of a cognitive agent. Another feature of a cognitive agent is the ability to collect and use information about the environment. This chapter also provides examples of querying of radios by other radios. Although it did not show any queries by end users, such queries can be implemented in the same manner as queries by other radios. It also shows that self-aware radios can execute commands. For instance, if two radios agree to use a specific length of the training sequence, they first negotiate a contract, and then both update their internal structures. © 2009 Elsevier Inc.
