We investigate on multi-dimensional QAM constellations optimized by sphere packing with the known densest lattices. We propose a greedy design method assisted by the sphere detection. It is demonstrated that the optimized constellations can significantly increase the squared minimum distance in comparison to the conventional QAM constellations. In addition, we analyze the optimized QAMs through the use of an extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart for iterative decoding. ©2009 IEEE.
