Long Term Care for Aging Populations

Publication ,  Chapter
Stallard, E

Long-term care (LTC) includes a broad array of services provided to disabled persons at home, in nursing homes, and in assisted-living facilities. Information on demographic and health characteristics of the population receiving LTC services derives from special targeted surveys. The largest and longest-running survey of this type is the National Long-Term Care Survey, conducted six times during 1982-2004. This article presents summary estimates of the size, characteristics, and resource utilization of the LTC population in the US based on the 1999 NLTCS using the HIPAA disability criteria; estimated changes in disability prevalence rates during 1984-99 are also presented.
