Nutritional guidelines during pregnancy and lactation

Publication ,  Chapter

Pregnancy and lactation are critical periods during which good nutrition is a key factor influencing the health of both child and mother. A woman’s dietary intake and nutritional status prior to conception and during pregnancy profoundly influence embryonic and fetal development, infant birthweight and health and the course and outcome of pregnancy. A woman’s dietary intake after delivery affects lactational performance and postpartum recovery. Promoting good nutrition for women throughout the childbearing years could reduce infant morbidity and mortality and improve the health status of infants and mothers. This chapter reviews the major nutrition issues that are important before, during and after pregnancy.
