Since its discovery in the early 1950s, the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor system in the brain has been implicated in many fundamental functions, including neuronal plasticity, neurotoxicity, learning, and memory (Riedel et al., 2003). The aim of this chapter is to summarize the current findings on the role of glutamatereceptor systems in learning and memory in different animal models and humans. The structure, localization, and pharmacology of these receptors will not be discussed in this chapter. For those who are interested in these particular topics, we refer them to an excellent recent review (Riedel et al., 2003).
