This chapter presents an overview of the basic instrumentation used in photonic applications. The chapter is intended to provide an introduction to the basic setups, apparatus, and system components for readers from other research fields who wish to become further acquainted with biomedical photonics. Only basic devices and components are described in this chapter. More advanced instrumentation and specialized systems for specific applications are described in detail in Chapters 7 through 9 of this handbook.
