The ‘awe-full’ fascination of pathology

The patient is suffering from a disease, and yet pathologists delight when looking at diagnostic images in examining the case. Through pathologists’ diagnostic interventions, it is sometimes possible to change the course of disease; the diagnosis changes the horizon of disease, opening the way to the control of disease and, in some cases, cure. The fascination that pathology exerts amongst its practitioners is registered in the variety of metaphors pathologists use to describe and name their diagnostic findings. Anatomic pathology is a visual discipline demanding of the pathologist accuracy in seeing and perceiving in order to reach the right diagnosis. Striking a balance between ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ attention is a quality pathologists need to cultivate to remain at once open-minded and to mitigate bias, and to be efficiently focused to reach an accurate and timely diagnosis.
