Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a major public health problem which afflicts 5 million Americans.1 A new diagnosis of CHF is made in 400 000 Americans each year.1 CHF is the most common cardiovascular discharge diagnosis in elderly patients. With the aging of the American population, the prevalence of CHF is expected to increase markedly.
