A number of converging factors (including ubiquitous computing, decreased cost of sequencing, imaging, uptake of EHRs driven by the Accountable Care Act and Meaningful Use) have made it possible to generate and aggregate much more detailed molecular, lab, clinical, and patient-reported data. Our increased understanding of the genomic changes associated with cancer and the complex mutational load present in a given tumor have made it apparent that identifying targeted therapies that are relevant and effective will require new strategies for engaging patients in cancer research and in sharing and analyzing these data. This chapter highlights some of the opportunities for increasing data liquidity through data sharing and data altruism.
