Gendered risk factors for burnout- Work-life integration and other workplace challenges

Women vascular surgeons face a variety of significant challenges rooted in gender inequality and discrimination that threaten gender differences in career satisfaction and wellness. Unconscious bias, explicit bias, pay inequity, challenges and opposition to career advancement, bullying, sexual harassment, and sexual assault continue to challenge women surgeons in the workplace. In addition, women experience work-home conflict at greater rates than men, in part due to multiple gender differences in domestic and parenting responsibilities. The cultivation of a supportive workplace culture may mitigate burnout and promote gender equity in surgery.
