Surgical Technique: Post-less, Single-Table Combined Periacetabular Osteotomy and Arthroscopy
The young adult hip has garnered much attention over the past decade, as evidenced by this text’s formative second edition. That focus has been divided among open and arthroscopic surgical techniques. The Ganz periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) has been the gold standard for the treatment of the non-arthritic dysplastic hip in the United States. Outcome studies of the PAO have demonstrated that postoperative impingement can lead to less consistent or poorer results. Open and arthroscopic treatment of labral pathology and impingement has now been added to the treatment decision tree of those undergoing PAO. While its indications and, thus far, impacts on outcome are still being investigated, it is our belief that arthroscopic treatment of central and peripheral compartment disease at the time of PAO is both worthwhile and achievable. Here we present the current technique utilized and developed by the senior surgeon (SAO).
