Recognizing and understanding artifacts is critical to performing accurate liver stiffness measurements. Artifacts are very common in liver stiffness measurements. There are several types of artifacts that can occur. Artifacts can occur due to poor acquisition technique, tissue composition, and operator error. This chapter describes these artifacts, how to recognize them, and how to hopefully avoid them.
