Knowledge of embryology is key to understanding the anatomy of congenital abnormalities and forming an appropriate workup strategy. Certain types of abnormalities require early imaging, but in other cases, imaging should be delayed until the child is closer to the age at which surgical intervention can be performed to prevent undue exposure to radiation in infancy and early childhood.
