The collocation method for obtaining the bound solutions of the Schrödinger equation is investigated. The technique does not require the evaluation of integrals and is very simple to implement. It is closely connected with other pointwise representations used recently, but has the advantage of requiring less effort to construct the algebraic eigenvalue equations. The method is tested on two Morse oscillator problems and found to give results which are as accurate as the conventional variational approach. In conjunction with a distributed Gaussian basis the collocation method is shown to be capable of describing highly excited states. © 1988.
