Polarized deuteron capture on 3He in the fusion resonance region 1
The absolute differential cross section, σ(θ), and the analyzing powers Ay(θ), Ayy(θ), and T20(θ) of the 3He(d, γ)5Li reaction have been measured using an 800 keV deuteron beam which was stopped in a gaseous 3He target. The same quantities, with the exception of T20(θ), were measured using a 600 keV incident deuteron beam which lost 300 keV in the target, thus integrating over the FWHM of the fusion resonance. A transition matrix element analysis gives two solutions which cannot be distinguished on the basis of this analysis alone. A coupled-channels resonating group model calculation has been performed and is used to select the physical solution. The results of this calculation are in good agreement with the data if the tensor force which is employed is reduced by a factor of 0.75 times its two-body value. If the tensor force is turned off, the calculated analyzing powers go to zero and the cross section is more than an order of magnitude too small, indicating the crucial role of the tensor force in this reaction.
