Hopf bifurcations and hysteresis in resonant tunneling diode circuits

Conditions for Hopf bifurcations and associated current oscillations are presented for a standard model of a resonant tunneling diode circuit. We derive a simple analytic formula for the Hopf bifurcation type (subcritical or supercritical) and discuss how this affects circuit operation, e.g., whether or not hysteresis and bistability are observed in current-voltage curves.
