Alexis de Tocqueville arrived in New Orleans on New Year's Day 1832 and in his very brief stay made wide-ranging observations. His field work involved setting an historical context, noting the social institutions operative, and taking into account the normative aspects of social interaction. His one-night stand in New Orleans is a model for sociologists today to make the most of the location of their professional meetings, such as post-Katrina New Orleans.
