The modern trends in the field of engineering thermodynamics are reviewed by focusing on six distinct areas: axiomatic formulations, graphic constructions, exergy analysis, thermodynamic design, the science of irreversible power plants, and the intermediate cooling method. This review shows that, contrary to the popular belief, engineering thermodynamics is a remarkably active, exciting and controversial field of research.
