An ultrahigh-bandwidth point-to-point communications system based on white-light sources, pulse shapers, and interferometric receivers is proposed. Dispersion compensation by interferometric receivers is described and demonstrated. Linear dispersion-limited communications bandwidths are shown to scale with the square root of the data packet length. © 1994 Optical Society of America.
