This paper reports on a preliminary investigation that was carried out to develop experimental techniques which would enable the measurement of flow velocities in compliant arterial casts whose walls are in motion. A cast was made of an aortic bifurcation that had been used in the previous studies employing rigid casts. Results which include the near-wall velocities measured and the shear rates derived are presented. The shear rates obtained at corresponding sites in both the compliant and rigid casts are also compared.
