The purpose of this study was to explore whether NPs see clients for mental health problems in the primary care setting and the strategies NPs use to manage such problems. The results of a survey of 110 nurse practitioners suggest that NPs regularly encounter clients with mental health problems, use a wide variety of individual and family-focused strategies in caring for such clients and typically refer clients who have multiple problems/diagnoses.
