The volume of natural convection results accumulated already in the heat transfer literature is discussed. This article discusses the methodology on which these results are based. The methods available to the problem solver in natural convection range all the way from theory to empiricism, from handwritten analysis to computer-aided analysis, from laboratory simulating to computer simulations. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the importance of the first step in any problem-solving effort, namely, the freedom to select the problem solving method.
