Highlights of the past year's studies on helix-turn-helix proteins include the striking details of DNA bending by Escherichia coli catabolite gene activator protein, the structure determination of the E. coli factor for inversion stimulation, and the continued elucidation of specific protein-DNA interactions. In addition, the importance of residues outside the helix-turn-helix motif and of protein conformational changes to DNA binding specificity were underscored. © 1992.
