This article reviews the essential physiology of oxygen exchange in the lungs, oxygen transport to tissue, and oxygen utilization by the body tissues. The physiologic effects of hyperbaric hyperoxia are summarized, with an emphasis on the circulatory responses to hyperoxia. Finally, the effects of hyperoxia on normal cellular processes are discussed.
