The interaction between climate forcings and triggering of floods was studied. Significant correlation was found between homogeneity and order measures of precipitation and cloud fields, the East Equatorial Pacific Sea-Surface Temperatures (EEP-SST) and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Index. The occurrence of extreme floods was related to space-time precipitation regime preceding such events, and the spatial arrangements of hydrologic gradients associated with it. Based on these findings, texture analysis of homogeneity and the macroscale climatology of precipitation fields were used to diagnose the advance occurrence of flooding over the Mississippi River.
