We describe a new depth-averaged numerical model for the simulation of the fate of sediments in estuaries. The model, denoted ELAsed, includes the following distinctive characteristics: a) erosion and deposition are allowed to occur simultaneously; b) flocculation is treated as a second order process; and c) the governing equations are solved by an Eulerian-Lagrangian finite element technique. The model is illustrated by application to a small marina where deposition predominates (Camache Cove, FL, USA) and to a large estuary with complex erosion - deposition characteristics (Tejo, Portugal).
