The basic principles of corrosion science are reviewed. The conversion of elemental metals or alloys into ions in an electrolyte is essentially an electrochemical process. Anodic and cathodic reactions are discussed. The specific forms in which corrosion processes can take in aqueous, atmospheric and soil environments, including a discussion of bacterialogical influences and high-temperature oxidation are described. An outline is given of the basic approaches which can be used to minimize or prevent corrosion losses.
