Anterior iliac crest bone grafting in foot and ankle surgery

Bone grafting has been aFSn integral part of orthopaedic surgery for more than 100 years. In the field of foot and ankle surgery, with its focus on reconstruction, fusions of the joints of the foot are a common procedure, and these often require supplemental graft material. Although many synthetic and allograft products are now available for this purpose, autogenous bone's osteoinductive and osteoconductive qualities are unmatched by commercial bone substitutes. Our experience with bone graft harvest from the iliac crest has been favorable, despite a recent trend to avoid harvest of iliac crest bone because of perceived morbidity and lengthened operative time. This paper presents a surgical technique that has low morbidity, adds minimal operative time, and provides autogenous bone graft material for procedures involving the foot and ankle. © 2006 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
